Origami Pencil Box with a Sliding Drawer

This pencil box has a drawer that slides in and out, and it is made from just two sheets of paper. Watch the video for every fold, and use these steps to keep track of where you are.

What you need

  • 2 sheets of A4 paper (one for the drawer, one for the sleeve)
  • Coloured paper for the strips
  • Ruler, pencil and scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or stickers to decorate

Steps

  1. Cut the drawer paper. Measure a rectangle of 18 × 27 cm on an A4 sheet and cut it out (video 0:52).
  2. Fold the drawer. Fold the rectangle into a long open box, following the video. Press every fold firmly with your nail or a ruler.
  3. Cut the strips. From coloured paper, cut 2 strips of 3 × 20.5 cm, 2 strips of 3 × 6.5 cm and 2 strips of 3 × 6 cm.
  4. Glue the strips. Glue each strip onto the drawer wall that matches its size (video 3:06).
  5. Fold the sleeve. Fold a full A4 sheet into a tube that fits around the drawer (video 4:04).
  6. Slide the drawer in. Push the drawer into the sleeve and check that it slides in and out easily (video 5:49).
  7. Decorate it. Draw on the sleeve, add dots or stickers, then fill the drawer with pencils.

Bigger challenge

Make a second box in another colour and stack them into a two-drawer organiser, or fold a strip of paper into a divider inside the drawer.

Teacher tip

Use paper between 80 and 120 gsm: thinner paper tears and card is hard to fold. Pre-crease the first folds for younger children, and let them work in pairs, one holding and one gluing. Let each child choose the colours and what to draw. Praise the trying, not a perfect box.
