Footprints on the Moon

Footprints on the Moon

Footprints on the Moon could last for millions of years!

Why?

Between 1969 and 1972, twelve astronauts walked on the Moon and left their boot prints in its soft grey dust. Those footprints are still there today!

On Earth, wind and rain wipe footprints away quickly. But the Moon has no air, so there is no wind and no rain. Only tiny space rocks falling very slowly can wear them away, so the footprints could last for millions of years!

Try it

Sprinkle flour on a tray and press your hand into it to make a print 🖐️. Now gently blow on it… what happens? That's what wind does on Earth. On the Moon there's no wind, so the print stays!

Ask Mum & Dad

If you could leave one footprint on the Moon, what would you want to write next to it?
