Quick summary

Animal Cards is a free printable set for ages 2–4: 10 picture cards of pets and farm animals, 10 matching word cards, a “My favorite animal” card and 4 simple games. Each picture card shows the animal, its sound, the sentence “I see a …” and a short “Did you know?” fact.

At a glance

  • Ages: 2–4. Picture cards are for looking, listening and saying; word cards are best for ages 4 and up.
  • Animals: cat, dog, cow, duck, fish, goat, horse, mouse, rabbit, frog.
  • Each picture card: the word, the animal sound, “I see a …” and a “Did you know?” fact.
  • Format: 6 landscape A4 pages, PDF. Print at 100% and cut out the cards.
  • Includes: 10 word cards, a “My favorite animal” card and 4 games.

How does this book help your child?

The cards are made for talking, pointing and playing. One idea has research behind it; the others are design choices.

  • Pointing helps words grow (research). In a study that followed toddlers, the number of different meanings a child expressed through gesture at 18 months predicted their vocabulary at 42 months, even after accounting for early speech (Rowe & Goldin-Meadow, 2009). Games 1 and 2 (“I make a sound — you point” and “Hide the cards and hunt”) are built around pointing and finding.
  • Picture first, word second (design choice). Younger children start with the picture cards. Older children can match each word card to its picture card.
  • Movement (design choice). Game 3 asks your child to move like the animal, so the word is tied to an action.

Honest note: the study above followed toddlers and shows an association, not proof that these cards will raise vocabulary.

What is inside the file?

  • A title card, then 10 picture cards: cat, dog, cow, duck, fish, goat, horse, mouse, rabbit and frog.
  • On each picture card: the animal sound, “I see a …” and a “Did you know?” fact.
  • A “Games to play” card with 4 games.
  • 10 word cards: “Match me with my picture card!”
  • A “My favorite animal” card for your child to draw or place a picture.

Guide for parents and teachers: how to use the book

Get the cards ready

  • Print on A4 at 100% (Actual size). The pages are landscape.
  • A grown-up cuts out the cards with safe scissors.
  • Optional: laminate the cards so they last.
  • Under age 3, keep small pieces and scissors out of reach and stay close.

The 4 games

  1. I make a sound — you point. Make an animal sound; your child points to the matching card.
  2. Hide the cards and hunt. Hide the cards around the room and find them together.
  3. Move like the animal. Hop like a rabbit, waddle like a duck, and say the word.
  4. Match the word cards. Put each word card next to its picture card. Best for ages 4 and up.

Tips

  • Short sessions: 5–10 minutes.
  • Say the word clearly, then the sentence: “I see a cat.”
  • Let your child choose the card to play with.

Younger children can simply look and listen. Match the word cards only when your child is ready.

Next step: add the Animals 1 mini book and busy book pages from the unit page; they use the same 10 animals.
